Tom Cruise needs psychiatry... badly

Tom Cruise on "Today"

Tom Cruise, in his own words, "never agreed with psychiatry". But after seeing him on "Today", all I can say is that he needs psychiatry... badly. According to Tom, there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance, and psychiatry is a "pseudo science". No one understands the history of psychiatry like Tom.

I think one of my favorite quotes from the interview was this one:

"If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, okay? That's what I've done. Then you go and you say where's the medical test? Where's the blood test that says how much Ritalin you're supposed to get?"

This, coming from someone who believes in the accuracy of the almighty E-Meter, a device that resembles something out of an old "Outer Limits" episode, or an Etch-a-Sketch on crack???

Well, Tom, I have news for you. You may not realize it, but you sir, are a bonafide, certified, freeze-dried whackaloon. Your chemicals probably haven't been balanced in a while. A very long while.

You need psychiatry, Tom. You really do. A few anti-psychotic drugs probably wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

New York Daily News - Entertainment - 'CBS protesters say Jack's off track, bring oldies back: "About a hundred oldies fans spent a sweltering lunch hour in Times Square yesterday trying to turn up the heat on Infinity Radio for dropping oldies on WCBS-FM (101.1).
But while everyone at the sidewalk rally blasted WCBS-FM over its abrupt June 3 switch to the Jack format, most acknowledged it's a longshot that the station would switch back."

More Reasons to Avoid Wal-Mart

Frontline Report on Wal-Mart

More Frontline on Wal-Mart

Fast Company article on Wal-Mart

Reading this makes me very glad that I don't have a Wal-Mart. The nearest one is about a 45 minute drive away. Now, I no longer feel deprived. I don't think I'll be shopping in any Wal-Mart store for a long time to come.

The reality is pretty darn close to the South Park episode I saw recently.

Save NPR and PBS

MoveOn.org: Save NPR and PBS

A House panel has voted to eliminate all public funding for NPR and PBS, starting with "Sesame Street," "Reading Rainbow," and other commercial-free children's shows. If approved, this would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting, threatening to pull the plug on Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch.

The cuts would slash 25% of the federal funding this year—$100 million—and end funding altogether within two years. The loss could kill beloved children's shows like "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Arthur," and "Postcards from Buster." Rural stations and those serving low-income communities might not survive. Other stations would have to increase corporate sponsorships.

This is a shot of Cinderella's Castle at Magic Kingdom since it's been decorated for "The Happiest Celebration on Earth". Notice the ominous clouds in the background. These ominous clouds contained rain. Lots and lots of rain. Lots and lots of rain and no rain poncho is not a good combination. Take my word for it.  Posted by Hello

To Listen, or Not to Listen? That is the Question.

I've learned a bit more about the recent changes to my favorite Oldies station, WCBS-FM 101.1. Not only has the station been replaced by the new JACK-FM, but two of my longtime favorite DJs, Harry Harrison and Cousin Brucie, were given the axe.

The new, streaming CBS-FM, while it will continue to play Oldies, will be missing two legendary radio personalities that I have literally grown up with. I started listening to them on my first purple Panasonic AM transistor radio back in the MusicRadio 77 (WABC) and 66 WNBC days. I've been listening to WCBS-FM 101.1 for pretty much all of its 33 years on the air, since I was around 9 years old.

My loyalties are torn. Do I continue to listen to JACK on my FM dial where WCBS-FM 101.1 used to be, and CBS-FM online, where the Oldies are now, even after they've axed Harrison and Morrow? Or, do I refuse to listen to either and support the corporate powers-that-be that decided my demographic was no longer important?

Tough choice.

Farewell WCBS-FM 101.1

WCBS-FM 101.1 has been New York's Oldies station for as far back as I can remember. That's a long way back, since my father used to listen to it when I was a kid, and I'm approaching my 42nd birthday.

Apparently, as of midnight, WCBS-FM 101.1 is no longer. At least not on the radio. In its place is a new station, JACK-FM, which as its slogan states, plays whatever it wants to. It has no format (i.e., pop, dance, oldies, etc.). Although I'm going to really miss my favorite oldies station, so far I've really been enjoying the variety of music being played on JACK-FM. One minute, I'm listening to Bananarama's "Venus". The next, it's Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion". I've heard stuff on JACK-FM that I haven't heard in years.

As for WCBS-FM, it is now CBS FM 101.1, a streaming radio station, available 24/7. So, while WCBS-FM 101.1 may be gone from my radio "dial", it's not gone forever.

Hot Weekend Plans and More...

"Auntie Carol" has a hot movie and sleepover date later today. My niece Erica and I are going to see "Madagascar", and then I'll probably end up getting a beauty makeover. Think "Extreme Makeover - The First Grade Edition":)

I recently bought my first Sims game, and have become addicted to playing God with 3D computer people's lives. It's actually helped me quit smoking. I had started up again back in December, out of stupidity. But, with a combination of the patch and the Sims, I've done really well the past 10 days. A few slips, but nothing major.

To celebrate, I've treated myself to my very first iPod. I bought the 4GB blue mini. I decided against the 20GB or the 40GB, because I think 1,000 songs is enough to carry around. I mean, I have over 600 songs stored on my computer, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to LISTEN to all 600 of them!!!
